This journey across Northern Spain, known as Green Spain for its verdant forests and meadows, starts in the stylish city of Bilbao where a visit to the renowned Guggenheim Museum is an artistic and architectural highlight.
Head for the soaring peaks of the Picos de Europa for splendid vistas and mountain scenery.
Descend to Oviedo and the charming fishing villages on the coast stopping to visit the extensive Buxu Palaeolithic caves where rock paintings are evidence of prehistoric man.
Before reaching our destination, Sanitago de Compostela, you’ll walk on the Roman walls of Lugo.
Explore the Medieval old town of Santiago de Compostela then attend the mass in the cathedral amongst hundreds of pilgrims from all over the world.
The cuisine of Green Spain includes fresh seafood, smoked meats, white cheese and delectable tapas accompanied by fine Asturian white wine and reds from Rioja.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Bilbao.
- Day 2 Visit Guggenheim Musuem. Walking tour of Bilbao’s Quarter then transfer by road to the Picos de Europa Mountains.
- Day 3 Walk in the impressive mountain scenery of the Picos (2-3 hours). Afternoon visit to a monastery and the village of Potes.
- Day 4 Visit Arenas de Cabrales and taste the famous ‘Cabrales’ cheese. Enroute to Oviedo visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga and the lakes of Ercina and Enol.
- Day 5 Morning guided tour of Oviedo. Drive to seaside Luarco and discover the spectacular Cabo de Peñas and charming fishing villages on the way.
- Day 6 Explore Megalithic and Celtic architecture in Pola de Allande. Walk on the ‘Camino Primitivo’(2-3 hours) then continue to Lugo and walk on the Roman city walls. Travel to Santiago de Compostela.
- Day 7 Walking tour of the medieval old town of Santiago de Compostela.
