The Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland has many big and famous mountains, the trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau amongst them.
The majestic snowy peaks and mighty glaciers are surrounded by beautiful flower meadows and in the valleys are delightful villages complete with wooden chalets, their balconies overflowing with flowers. This circular footloose walking tour is a true classic and takes you in amongst some of the best scenery the world can offer.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Interlaken.
- Day 2 Interlaken – morning free to explore then take the ferry to the delightful lakeside village of Iseltwald for overnight.
- Day 3 Iseltwald to Meiringen. Walk high above Lake Brienz to the alpine pastures of Axalp then through delightful woods to the secret Hinterburgsee before descending to Meiringen – 6.5hrs.
- Day 4 Meiringen to Grindelwald. Begin by passing the Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes had his famous duel with Professor Moriarty - then climb up the Rosenlaui Valley to Grosse Scheidegg. Views of the Wetterhorn are replaced by a breathtaking panorama dominated by the Eiger. Descend to Grindelwald – 7.5hrs.
- Day 5 Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen. Incredible scenery with views of the ‘big three’ – the Monch, Jungfrau and Eiger - on the climb up to Kleine Scheidegg and subsequent descent to Wengen. The descent to the car free village of Wengen takes you under the Lauberhorn Mountain, famous for its downhill ski race. From Wengen, perched on a ledge above the valley floor, you descend to Lauterbrunnen – 6.5hrs.
- Day 6 Lauterbrunnen.
Day free - visit Mürren, another traffic-free village perched above the other side of the valley, or, weather permitting - the epic railway journey to the Jungfraujoch at an icy 3,450 metres. - Day 7 Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken. Walking down the valley to Zweilütschinen and on further to the villages of Gsteigwiler and Wilderswil where typical Swiss covered wooden bridges can be seen. Return to Interlaken – 4 hours.
