Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Delhi and transfer to your hotel. Remainder of day is at leisure
- Day 2 Enjoy a full day guided sightseeing tour of Old and New Delhi including Raj Ghat-memorial site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated; Jama Masji - largest mosque in India; and the Red Fort. Afternoon tour includes Presidential Palace, India Gate, Parliament House and Qutab Minar the victory tower built in the 13 century.
- Day 3 Fly Delhi – Varanasi. Is one of the oldest living cities in the world situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges and the most important pilgrimage site in India. In the evening attend the glittering ‘Aarti’ (prayer) ceremony. Huge lamps are set ablaze and Brahmins hold forth the lamp as the crowd chants hymns.
- Day 4 Early morning boat ride along the Ganges to witness the cremation ghats followed by a walk through the old city of Varanasi. Late morning visit to Sarnath for a tour of the holy Buddhist site where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. Afternoon visit to Bharat Mata Mandir (Mother India Temple) to see the national personification of India as a mother godesss. She is usually depicted as a woman clad in an orange or a saffron sari holding a flag and sometimes accompanied by a lion.
- Day 5 Varanasi - Khajuraho. Morning free. Midday flight to Khajuraho, a once small unknown village that has now become a UNESCO World Heritage site for its magnificent Jain and Hindu temples. Built in the 9th and 10th centuries, they feature more than 800 sculptures depicting deities, mythical beasts, battle scenes and most famously couples engaged in erotic acts.
- Day 6 Return to Delhi (internal flight excluded) where your walking holiday ends.
