Set on the cone of an ancient volcano that erupted over 3500 years ago, it is rumoured to be the site of the ‘lost city’ of Atlantis.
The white-washed towns of Thira and Oia are spectacularly located on cliff tops that formed part of the rim of the caldera, high above the crystal clear, blue, shimmering sea. Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands, where the historic port town of Hania (Chania) is sure to delight with its tranquil Old Harbour, delightful Venetian Quarter and lively, colourful atmosphere.
Crete has some of Europe’s most impressive gorges, resplendent with plane trees, Cyprus pines and maple trees.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive in Athens, Greece.
- Day 2 Morning flight to Crete. Afternoon walk through Venetian Quarter and Old Harbour area of picturesque Hania.
- Day 3 Walk through scenic Agia Irini Gorge (3-4 hours). Enjoy a refreshing swim at Sougia.
- Day 4 Free day in Hania to explore surrounding areas or relax on the beach. Optional Samaria Gorge walk.
- Day 5 Ferry across the Sea of Crete to beautiful Santorini. Free afternoon. Enjoy the famous sunset from village of Oia.
- Day 6 Morning walk around ancient caldera. Visit Prehistoric Museum of Thira.
- Day 7 Free day in Santorini.
- Day 8 Day ferry to Piraeus. Transfer into Athens, where our walking tour ends.
