The mountain range of the Picos de Europe is just 20 kms from the northern Spanish coast.
Legend says it was named by the early explorers whose first site of Europe on their returning voyages was the ranges high peaks. There are three major massifs and deep glacial valleys. Walking trails abound and link attractive mountain villages and a network of mountain refuges.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Arenas de Cabrales in the Picos de Europa which can be easily reached by public transport from Bilbao or Santander.
- Day 2 Tielve to Sotres (4 hrs). Short transfer to the start of today’s walk to reach one of the highest villages in the Picos. Overnight in Sotres high in the mountains.
- Day 3 Sotres to Vega de Urriellu. Today’s route takes you to the heart of the Picos de Europa, to the refuge at the base of stunning Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes). Accommodation in Sotres.
- Day 4 Eastern Massif. Circular walk in Andara, an area of fascinating geography and former mining activity. Accommodation in Sotres.
- Day 5 Arrangements end after breakfast with a short transfer to Arenas de Cabrales to take public transport to Oviedo (if joining The Way of St James Walk) or Santander or Bilbao.
