The Dordogne and Vezere Rivers meander through this tranquil landscape, irrigating forests that have produced wild mushrooms and rich black truffles for centuries. Paths lead across rolling hills, through woods and flower-filled pastures, past medieval castles perched improbably on the edge of cliffs and gorges and stone-built medieval villages. Cuisine is a feature and the Perigord region is famous for its truffles and foie gras.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Les Eyzies.
- Day 2 Walk to the troglodyte village of La Madeleine (3.5 hrs).
- Day 3 Walk to the 12thC castle at Commarque then to Le Bardenat (5 hrs).
- Day 4 Visit Sergeac enroute to St Leon sur Vezere. Visit prehistoric site at La Roque St Christophe (5 hrs).
- Day 5 Walk to bastide village of Domme overlooking the Dordogne River. Optional afternoon canoeing.
- Day 6 Walk to Castelnaud and its chateau then continue to the riverside village of Beynac (5 hrs).
- Day 7 Day free in medieval Sarlat. Optional trip to Lascaux II.
- Day 8 Trip ends in Sarlat after breakfast.
