In the heart of Provence lies the Luberon, where ochre-coloured villages nestle amongst lavender fields and vineyards, and gentle hills rise to the south.
Discover the Dentelles de Montmirail in the foothills of Provence’s highest peak, Mont Ventoux. Explore Roman remains at Vaison la Romaine and Gordes, Provence’s best known hilltop village. Provencal cuisine is renowned and you’ll have the opportunity to taste wine from the world-famous Cotes du Rhone vineyards.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Avignon. Allow time to visit the walled centre and the Palais des Papes (Popes’ Palace) and wander the fortifications. Attend briefing at 6pm.
- Day 2 Transfer to Gigondas in the Dentelles de Montmirail. Walk to Seguret through Cotes du Rhone vineyards. Transfer from Seguret to Vaison-la-Romaine and our base for the next 3 nights.
- Day 3 Free day. Visit the not-to-be-missed 6,000-seat Roman theatre, the largest archaeological site in France plus other Gallo-Roman remains in the town. In the centre of town are the ruins of the medieval castle. Today is market day and a showcase of regional produce.
- Day 4 Our circuit walks takes us to the charming little village of Crestet, perched on a crest of the Dentelles de Montmirail facing Mont Ventoux. Continue to the ancient village of Malaucene with its’ imposing fort and ramparts.
- Day 5 Transfer to Gordes, perched on the khaki-coloured cliffs of the high Vaucluse Plateau. Time to explore this town of silk painters, weavers and potters, where houses of golden stone rise to the Renaissance chateau crowning the top. Afternoon circuit walk to the 12th century Cistercian Abbaye de Senanque. Transfer to the hamlet of Les Séguins (Buoux) (4 hours).
- Day 6 Walk in the Buoux Gorge and along the Aiguebrun River. Continue into the Luberon hills to Buoux Fort
(4 hours). - Day 7 Circuit walk to the charming village of Bonnieux along the ridges of the Petit Luberon mountains (6 hours).
- Day 8 In the morning transfer to Avignon where the trip ends.
