The spectacular Dachstein Glacier is a World Heritage region and a wonderland for walkers.

Itinerary and Highlights

  • Day 1 Arrive at Abersee / Wolfgangsee.
  • Day 2 St. Wolfgang – St. Gilgen (10 km). Go by boat from Abersee to St. Wolfgang on the other side of the lake. Walk along the lake shore to the Mozart-village of St. Gilgen. Take a scenic boat trip across the lake from St. Gilgen back to Gschwendt (Abersee).
  • Day 3 Schwarzensee and Strobl (16 km). Leave St. Wolfgang by boat then start the walk to the Schwarzensee. An opportunity to enjoy fresh trout from the lake for lunch. Take a pathway to Strobl / Schwarzenbach, around the mountain “Bürglstein” to reach the lake promenade in Strobl.
  • Day 4 Rest day in the Emperor’s town of Bad Ischl. Visit the Emperor’s castle Café Zauner and the Hotel Austria, where the engagement of Emperor Franz Josef to Elisabeth of Bavaria took place.
  • Day 5 Brine-pipeline walk to Bad Goisern (10 km). From Bad Ischl walk along the River Traun to Katrin cable car station. The “Salzkammergut Brine Trail” is well marked. The first small village is Lauffen and the next is Weissenbach from where you follow the River Traun to Bad Goisern, part of the World Heritage area of Dachstein.
  • Day 6 Brine-pipeline walk to Hallstatt (10 km). Follow the Brine Trail from Bad Goisern to Hallstatt. Visit the saltmine then the historic centre of Hallstatt. Return by boat and train to Bad Goisern.
  • Day 7 Bad Ishl to Abersee (11 km). Walk from Bad Ischl along the Elisabeth-Waldweg to Pfandl. Follow the River Ischl to Strobl. Continue through the Blinkling Moos to Abersee.
