This walk not only includes the quintessential Tuscan countryside of rolling hills, vineyards and hilltop villages but also the two great ‘art’ cities of Florence and Siena.
You stay in the heart of this landscape for two nights in an ‘agriturismo’ (working farm). You’ll explore on foot the area around stunning San Gimignano with its’ landmark four towers; less known, ancient Volterra; plus smaller gems like Colle Val d’Elsa and Monteriggioni. Picnic lunches, wine tastings and dinners featuring local specialities complete this whole Tuscan experience.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Florence. Allow time to explore this treasure trove of art and history.
- Day 2 Travel to Siena for a sightseeing tour, free time after. Head for San Gimignano for overnight on an ‘agriturismo’.
- Day 3 Walk the classic landscape round San Gimignano with time to visit the medieval town (5 hrs).
- Day 4 Walk to Colle di Val d’Elsa then transfer to Volterra, settled since Etruscan times and brimming in ancient and medieval history.
- Day 5 Circuit walk today to the hamlet of Prato d’Era passing chestnut groves and limestone cliffs, returning via the Roman theatre to the historical centre of Volterra (4.5 hrs).
- Day 6 Spectacular walk through forest and the Calanchi region. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the way to Montecatini (4.5 hours).
- Day 7 Walk towards Monte Voltraio and explore the medieval building of the Casale Rocca. Walk to the Villa Palagion and explore the buildings and Italian gardens (5 hrs).
- Day 8 Trip ends in Volterra this morning (Sun).
